Fen & marsh

There is a group of wetland habitats that often occurs together as a transition from aquatic to terrestrial environments:
  • fen peatland;
  • reedbed (fen dominated by the common reed Phragmites);
  • swamp (below water level);
  • carr woodland and marsh (above water level).
This is well illustrated in the Cairngorms National Park by the Insh marshes fen complex, on the River Spey, between Kingussie and Kincraig. At Dinnet, on Deeside, the vegetation also includes fen, swamp, reedbed and carr woodland communities.
