Brocken Spectre

What an amazing spectacle – seeing a brocken spectre! They are characteristically associated with walking along the edge of the Cairngorm plateau, in conditions when the corries below are filled with thicker mist, and the sun is low and behind the observer, looking towards the edge.

The shadow of the observer is enlarged and often surrounded by a bright arc, or coloured lights, thrown on to the bank of cloud. If there is more than one observer, individuals only see their own shadow!
